All resources you might need in one place.
Sign up as an Ambassador today HERE, or follow ECHO on social media until signups open in your country.
ECHO Ambassadors have a special role in the Project. If you are a community leader, a teacher, or simply a soil enthusiast with a knack for engaging others, this might be the perfect role for you.
You can learn more about becoming and ECHO Ambassador here:
Each Citizen Scientist will receive a toolkit containing everything they need to collect a soil sample.
As an Ambassador, it will be your responsibility to distribute kits among your group of citizen scientist participants. It will also be your responsibility to collect the kits after the sampling is done. You will receive instructions on how to send them for lab analysis when you join ECHO.
You can learn more about the soil collection kit here:
We are proud to have created a community of dedicated soil health and soil science enthusiasts. ECHO would not be what it is without them.
The names and faces you see here are just a few among our amazing team of Ambassadors. Learn more about them (or reach out and say hello!) during Ambssador Mondays on our social media sites.

Once you have your toolkit, you can head outside and select your perfect spot for soil sampling.
If you don’t have a site selected yet, consider one of the following: your garden, your vegetable patch, your field or orchard, a nearby meadow, a city park, a community garden, a lawn by a children’s playground, a nature trail, a forest, a patch of green by the road. Make sure the location you choose is safe (watch for car traffic!).
If you are taking multiple samples, or if you are a part of a group taking multiple samples, make sure to spread out. You can sample the same area, but try to keep the sampling sites at least 50 metres apart, if possible. Please remember that you will need a separate toolkit for each soil sample.
We have filmed the full sampling process. Click the button below to view the full playlist with instructions.
What makes for a good sampling site? As a Ambassador, you might find yourself taking to citizen scientists who are not certain where to start.

Be mindful of any legal restrictions regarding land access in your country/area.
*Be midful of local laws. Regulations on accessing public and private land vary by country.

Are you trying to engage children or teens? Do you enjoy gamified learning yourself? Check out SoiLab for Teens: an online resource designed for young soil enthusiasts.
You can view all data ECHO generated in our Data Repository. Your samples will be added to ECHOREPO after their lab analysis is completed.
You can get familiar with the procedure even before sampling. Download training materials in your preferred language to get started. You can also download all training materials through the ECHO App.
